RJM Bagpipes by Roddy MacLeod MBE
Roddy MacLeod, MBE, is one of the most distinguished and widely accomplished pipers of his generation, and one of Highland piping’s most profoundly influential identities. As a soloist, Roddy MacLeod won his first Gold Medal at the Northern Meeting in 1986, then the Argyllshire Gathering Gold Medal in 1988. He has won numerous piping titles over his career including the Glenfiddich Piping Championship five times, winning the piobaireachd event a record ten times and the MSR three times, the Silver Chanter seven times, the Northern Meeting Clasp on two occasions. He is also a renowned instructor for both soloists and pipe bands.
The RJM bagpipe is of a unique design fashioned by Roddy MacLeod in collaboration with David Naill and Co. Ltd. RJM bagpipes are designed to reflect some of the best qualities of Roddy’s 1907 R.G. Lawrie bagpipes.
The most substantial difference from Roddy’s Lawrie bagpipe is the bass drone which has been completely redesigned to allow the drone to tune comfortably at the modern day pitch with a wide variety of cane and synthetic reeds. The tenor drones, which are different but similar in some dimensions to both the Lawrie and Naill bagpipes, have been designed to produce a bright tone while tuning comfortably to the optimum pitch of the RJM chanter.
The result is a rich, warm, stable and full sounding drone which absolutely recreates the tonal qualities for which Roddy Macleod’s bagpipe has become renowned for worldwide.
