Q: Standard or long? Why is one or the other better?

Asked by: Jennifer L Short - 1/7/2021
A: In my opinion, the length of the chanter mostly impacts your posture when sitting at the table…it used to be that it had to do with finger spacing, but most pipe makers have adjusted for this. For me, if you are 5’10” or taller go with the long, and under 5’10” go with the standard length.

Q: I assume the chanter is a poly. What brand is it and can we request a particular practice chanter? I currently use a Hardie and have had a Dunbar in years past. I will be purchasing this kit for my son who is interested in playing the pipes.

Asked by: Craig - 1/30/2020
A: The chanter is a plastic McCallum. We can make a Dunbar or Hardie substitute if you like. Just mention it in the comments section during checkout!

Q: Is the long chanter a McCallum PC4? Also curious why you ask whether this is for a new beginner -- does that determine the type of reeds shipped with the set?

Asked by: Kathleen - 12/8/2019
A: Yes, that would be the McCallum PC4!

Q: 1) How do I know if I should purchase the standard or long size chanter? 2) Are there online videos to get me started on the bagpipes? I planned on taking bagpipe lessons at the Hochstein Music School in Rochester, NY but classes don't start until September of 2021? Thanks, Gary Gary Sloan 585-746-1480

There are also instructors who do zoom or Skype lessons that can help get you going as well!
