Go ahead and buy some

I love Melvin reeds and was excited to try out his new solo reed when I learned of them. Good sound right out of the box and have worked well in my Naill and my mc2 chanters. As you might expect the sound is a little bit mellower than the standard but are still bright and lively. One thing I did find was that even the medium reeds were fairly easy right out of the box. Not a huge problem but I tend to expect a little bit more backbone in a fresh reed but i could see these reeds breaking in quite nicely.

This is a great reed! I just picked up a R.G. Hardie Infinity chanter and this reed has really settled in nicely. Just a little tape on high and low G, D and F. Definitely a good match for my chanter.

I am a new piper and my teacher lives an hour away so I have to do a lot of learning on my own and for someone like me the Melvin Solo is great. It has nice pleasing sound and is easy to blow in. I use the easy strength and find it becomes comfortable quickly and requires very little adjustment and tape. I have a McCallum Ceol poly and a Naill solo and it works the same way for both.

Excellent reed I am using this reed in my colin kyo chanter and the scale was good and did not need to tape. the medium reed is on the softer side and mellow as others have stated.
