Q: Hello. Very seriously considering buying a 440 chanter. How do I get my drones down that low? Will the Bflat drone reeds get me close or do I need something else? I'd prefer not to have extenders if possible. Thnks

A: In order to get your drones down to A440 you would need to use either drone reed extenders or if you have McCallum Pipes, drone extenders. These are very nice and are added to the tops of your drones...not drone reeds to lower your pitch.

Q: What chanter reed do you recommend to work with the 440 chanter?

A: Most reeds work will in this chanter. Typically, I prefer to use a non ridge cut reed to help keep the pitch from rising. Shepherd molded, Gilmore, or, Shepherd B flat, or the Melvin B flat.

Q: I have a set of RG Hardie 1980s set of pipes with Ez Drone reeds will McCallum extenders work? Thanks

A: They may work, but it is uncertain to say. If the extenders are to small, they can be built up, but if they are to large, this would be a problem. The wholes in the top of the drones very from maker to maker. If you decide to try them and they don’t work, we would be happy to take them back for a refund.
