Gibson Practice Chanter Reed

This is an excellent reed in the right practice chanter. I purchased this reed for my McCallum PC5 and it doesn't work in that particular practice chanter, but is amazing in my old Lawrie. In the McCallum, it's very easy to overblow and Low A and Low G always sound awful with this reed (if they sound at all). There seems to be no sweet spot for those notes especially. In the Lawrie, the reed sounds every note perfectly and is not particularly easy to overblow. It never shuts off with regular playing and also has great tone. It seems to work better in chanters with a slightly wider chamber even though if it doesn't touch the sides of the more narrow ones.

I just received my reed, and it is the easiest practice chanter reed I have ever played. They say it is ideal for stronger blowers who have trouble with chanter reeds shutting off during embellishments, but I am a fairly hard blower and I’m basically whistling into it and it shuts off. I would only recommend this reed if you blow your practice chanter very, very softly.

Gibson & Abbotts are the only reeds I use for my chanter. This is an easy reed to play and has good tone, but it does stick a little at times — other than that, no complaints. This is also the reed that my fellow band members use.
