The new Abbott reed's narrow blades work exceptionally well in the Naill and Pipers Choice Practice Chanters.

Good and loud but...
This reed is kind of loud and takes a bit more air with a little bit more breath control. Nothing too arduous. However, knowing what I know now about other reeds, I would not like this as my first or only PC reed. I think it's better suited for somebody who's been playing for X period of time and has their breathing endurance and playing skills up a little bit. Ie. If you're studying out of The Green Book, after you got a bit of a handle on Scots Wha Hae. Prior to that I think a G1 or Ezeedrone or Walsh or Warnock maybe even a Q is better for the raw beginner. And I'm not sure which PC reed may be louder or loudest, but people who may not notice you practicing with the others I mentioned are probably going to notice you practicing with this one. For reference: My PC is the Dunbar millennium 2,000, now simply called their LONG PC. Dunbar tells me the only thing that changed is the name. Nothing that would affect sound quality.

Phenomenal with a McCallum
Ordered with a McCallum PC and the tone and pressure required is perfect. Really loving the pairing, and it replaced my old Abbot Reed that I've been using for many many years. Abbott reeds have a robust sound and are very hard wearing. I suspect this reed will last for several years as well.

Q:
Regarding the blue Abbott narrow practice chanter reed, what is its playing characteristics regarding airflow? Would it be rated as harder or easier or quieter or easily overblown Etc

A:
This reed doesn't take a significant amount of air to make work, but is not easy to over blow and shut off!

Q:
I have a beginner student who has a cheap chanter with a cheap synthetic reed. she over blows i assume because she also plays the clarinet, either way when i checked the reed on my chanter it also was a synthetic and im not really happy with it. This student also is wearing hinged braces...hmm. do you have any recommendations as far as reeds for such situations. I find my reed gets too wet really quickly I do blow them out, have rewound them but havent tried the elastic band. what suggestions do you have. kim

Q:
Hello, Could you help me decide on a reed for my practice chanter? I have the R.G. Hardie long practice chanter and I've been playing about two months. My tutor recommended Abbott reeds, but I'm not sure how to differentiate between the options. Occasionally the chanter will shut off, but it's not a huge concern and I wouldn't consider myself an especially hard blower. Please let me know what you think, and if you have any additional questions.
