Who is The Pipers Hut?
The Pipers Hut is Owned and Operated
by the Maffett Family of
Columbus
Ohio
. Jon Maffett (the principal director) began piping at the age of 10
under the instruction of Mary McCoy of Canal Fulton, Ohio. Jon’s primary focus
in piping has been band music and he played with the MacGregor pipe band through
the 1980's. Attending college, starting a career and family, Jon stepped away
from piping during the 1990's. However, the lure of the bagpipes never left him.
When the opportunity to play in a new band in the
Central Ohio
area presented itself, Jon jumped at the chance. Once again happily in the
bagpipe scene, in 1999 “The Pipers Hut” was born. In 2000 Jon started
Piobaireachd lessons with the late Willie Connell of
London
Ontario
,
Canada
. In 2002 Jon became an active member of the North Coast Pipe Band playing with the
band until 2005. Also, during 2005 Jon started actively focusing on solo light
music taking instruction from Gale Brown by tape. The 2006 season found Jon as a
member of the Toronto Police Pipe Band. During this time he also took
instruction from John Cairns. Jon has participated in “The Metro Cup”
, “The Sandy Jones”, “ The George Sherriff “ and “The Nicol-Brown”
invitational's. He has been recently promoted to the Open/Professional level of
competitive piping. Jon is currently the piping instructor at the College of
Wooster (Ohio), and the Pipe Major of the newly formed Columbus Regional Pipe
Band.
